Lesson 5: Traffic Control Planning and MOT Setup
This lesson covers the planning side of traffic control and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) setup. Traffic Control Supervisor certifications, flagger certifications, and traffic control plan preparation requirements vary significantly by state. Many states require Traffic Control Supervisors holding ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) certifications, state-specific certifications such as the Florida DOT Maintenance of Traffic Advanced Certification, or other state-recognized credentials. Project-specific traffic control plans must comply with the applicable state DOT MUTCD adoption and any project-specific requirements. Lesson 6: Site Preparations and Existing Conditions Assessment
This lesson covers site preparation principles and existing conditions assessment. Specific site preparation requirements are governed by project specifications, state DOT standards, and project-specific conditions. Pavement condition assessment methodologies vary, and formal pavement condition assessments for project decisions may require qualified personnel and standardized assessment protocols. This lesson does not constitute training as a certified pavement evaluator or pavement management professional.
Lesson 7: Milling and Surface Preparation
This lesson covers milling and surface preparation principles. Milling machine operation requires manufacturer-specific and machine-specific training. Milling equipment manufacturers including but not limited to Wirtgen Group, Roadtec, Caterpillar (CAT), Bomag, and Dynapac produce equipment with significantly different controls, configurations, and operational procedures. Operators must receive manufacturer-specific training and machine-specific procedures before operating actual equipment. Milling depths, patterns, and surface preparation requirements are governed by project specifications and state DOT requirements. Lesson 8: Tack Coat Application
This lesson covers tack coat application principles. Tack coat materials include emulsions, asphalt cement, and specialty products with different handling and application requirements. Users must follow manufacturer specifications, state DOT requirements, and project-specific requirements for the actual tack coat materials and applications used. Lesson 9: Paving Sequence and Production Planning

Specific paving sequence requirements, production targets, and operational constraints are governed by project conditions, weather considerations, traffic management requirements, contractual milestones, and other project-specific factors. Production planning approaches vary by company, project type, and equipment configuration. Users must adapt general planning principles to specific project requirements.
Lesson 10: Grade and Cross-Slope Management
This lesson covers grade and cross-slope management for paving operations. Survey work, grading design, and pavement design are typically regulated under state Professional Engineering practice laws and state surveying licensure laws. Survey-grade measurements for project compliance may require Professional Land Surveyor involvement under state surveying practice laws. Grade and cross-slope design decisions affecting pavement structural performance may require Professional Engineer involvement under state engineering practice laws. Users with survey or design responsibilities must operate in compliance with their state's practice laws.
